Your Guide to the 2026 Semi-Open Primary

If you are registered as Independent or Decline-to-State (DTS), the process is now simple.

How to Cast Your Ballot:

  • At the Polls: When you arrive at your polling place, simply notify the poll worker which major party ballot (Democratic or Republican) you would like to use for that primary.
  • By Mail: When requesting an absentee ballot, you will be able to select the major party ballot of your choice.
  • Your Status Stays the Same: You do not have to re-register or change your party affiliation.
  • Voter Registration: Ensure your information is up to date at NMVote.org.

Key Deadlines:

  • May 5th: Early voting starts at the Clerk’s Annex
  • May 16th: Early voting is expanded to polling locations
  • May 19th: Last day to submit an absentee ballot request
  • May 30th: Last day of Early Voting
  • June 2nd: Primary Election Day!

WHO CAN VOTE:

  • You must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen to vote.
  • You can register and vote in the primary elections at 17, provided you will turn 18 on or before the November 3, 2026, general election.
  • Individuals convicted of a felony are ineligible to vote while incarcerated, on parole, or on probation. Once these terms are completed, you must re-register to regain your voting eligibility.
  • If you are a non-minor party voter and wish to change your affiliation, you must do so before the May 5, 2026 deadline.
